Cancer-free pug!

As of last Thursday, March 28, 2013 Dexter is officially in remission from doggie cancer!

Before I told Dexter he's in remission:

After I told Dexter he's in remission:

See the excitement???

In case anyone is curious, about a year ago we went to the vet for a routine exam, only to discover that the bump on Dexter's head that we had always thought was a cyst was actually a malignant tumor. It turns out that Dexter had a type of tumor called a mast cell tumor, which affects mostly short-nosed dogs but can be found in other breeds of dogs as well. Surgery was performed and the
tumor was removed. Hooray!

Then came the news that Dexter had yet another mast cell tumor, this time on his leg. We went ahead with a second surgery last July.

I thought maybe that would be the end, that we would either need to place him on chemotherapy or radiation. But, luckily that hasn't been the case. Instead he was placed on a medication called Prednisone, which has been shown to stop mast cell tumor growth in dogs. In addition, Dexter is also taking liquid fish oil with his dinner as well as half a tablet of Selenium. So far (knock on wood) it's worked quite well! Dexter has not developed any new bumps, save for one small one on his neck that may or may not be a mast cell tumor but is not considered a threat to his health. Either way, it has stabilized and is very small. I took him to the vet for a checkup last Thursday and he seems to be in remission!

Dexter, you da bomb.
